The Russia and Ukraine War

The month began with a focus on the second peace negotiation meeting between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, scheduled for last Monday, June 2. However, the commotion began over the weekend. On Saturday, May 31, Russia attacked several Ukrainian locations with drones and missiles, and, to the surprise of Russian security services, on Sunday, June 1, the Ukrainian Security Services launched the so-called "Operation Spider Web." This consisted of a drone and missile attack against Russian air forces at several positions in Russian territory, including those far from the Ukrainian border, causing significant damage to civilian infrastructure and strategic aircraft. Given this scenario, Monday's meeting seemed ineffective and peace seemed far off, as it turned out. The only achievement was a new prisoner exchange and the repatriation of some Ukrainian children. Recall that at the first peace meeting, held on May 16, both nations had also agreed to a prisoner exchange. We ca...

Blackout in Spain: Understanding the Spanish electricity system (3)

One month after the April 28 blackout that left Spain and Portugal without electricity, investigations continue to clarify the causes of the incident and those responsible. However, there are structural elements of the Spanish electricity market worth analyzing: its status as an energy island due to limited interconnection with other countries, the focus of local policies toward energy independence, and the limitations of the local electricity grid. These four factors account for a series of aspects, from the perspective of local and regional EU policy, as well as energy management, that are decisive for the development of the Spanish electricity market and the strength of the system. From the debate on the power blackout The blackout in the Iberian Peninsula has raised questions about the Spanish energy sector and its management. The spotlight has been placed on various aspects that specialized media have been analyzing over time. The blackout involves important entities in Spain ...

Blackout in Spain. Understanding the Spanish electrical system (2)

Continuing with the previous article, I considered it important to understand how the Portuguese electricity sector works. As we all know, it is interconnected with the Spanish electricity system and also suffered the blackout on April 28th. The energy industry also needed time to provide electricity to the country, and its government is working together with the Spanish government to investigate the causes of the outage and prepare for possible future scenarios. In that sense, I wanted to investigate a little about the structure of the electricity sector in this country before continuing with my next article. I incorporated some aspects of the current energy policy outlined in the national energy plan (PNEC 2030), as well as addressed some aspects of nuclear development, which has been completely ruled out in this country for several decades. Finally, I put fossil fuels into context, which, while not part of the electricity mix , are essential to the national energy matrix. About th...

Blackout in Spain. Understanding the Spanish electrical system

On 28 April, Spain and Portugal experienced an unprecedented event. At midday, a blackout struck, leaving the entire Iberian Peninsula without electricity. The first measures were taken to restore service, but it took several days for it to be fully restored throughout the country. Investigations are still underway to determine the causes and those responsible, although there is no denying that the operation of an electrical system is too complex to be able to unravel what actually happened, beyond the hypotheses that are circulating. On the other hand, for the average citizen who is not involved in the electricity sector, knowing how this system works can be complex and even unknown. In this first part, I will describe the current structure of the Spanish electricity system: generation, transmission and distribution; and in the second part, next week, I will present an analysis, taking into account the opinions of experts on the blackout and the conditions of the system, as well as an...
